How can the restoration of the Palace of Westminster create jobs and develop skills in your community and across the UK?

During June and July 2021 we asked for your views and ideas about how we can support training and apprenticeships in your area, and for ideas on how we can ensure that across our supply chains we are recruiting a diverse range of people.

The views and ideas shared will help to inform the detailed and costed restoration and renewal plan. You can look at what people said below. You can also sign up for information on further activities that will follow in due course.

Parliament has decided that the Palace of Westminster will remain its permanent home, after the restoration project is complete. We are working on the detailed restoration plan which will be presented to Parliament for its decision. We want to take your views into account as we develop this plan.

There will be lots of opportunities for people in many different types of jobs as we restore the Palace of Westminster. We want to make sure that people across the UK have the chance to learn new skills and get involved. We will be recruiting apprentices and interns from towns and communities across the country. As part of this once in a generation project, the Restoration and Renewal Programme is seeking your views, ideas, experience and knowledge to help inform our plans for different aspects of the restoration of the Palace of Westminster.

These online conversations will run until 14 July 2021. A range of other activities with different groups around the UK will continue throughout 2021.

unknown author5 years ago What a trendy nonsense to try and pretend because we all have to pay for it we have to find something to claim we are all benefitting.We need a new, up to date, seats for all, room for all, always televised AND PUT ON RADIO FOR EASE OF ACCESS AMD TO SAVE THE CLIMATE that we can choose what we observe from all committees and proceedings. We also need to be able to observe first hand if we wish. What trendy nonsense (and illegal invasion of privacy?) to have cookies foisted on us, accounts, email or other access only, passworded entry to make a comment. So anti democratic. People like questionnaires so send them one if you are pandering to more statistical analysis instead of an understanding of real lifeI selected something else as a topic and was told I must pick a topic. Stop manipulating!

unknown author5 years ago I strongly believe that a new, tech enabled and modern Parliament should be built in the centre of the country. This would be efficient, cost effective, environmentally friendly, empowering to the regions, create jobs and make a powerful statement about our future.The historic Palace of Westminster would be preserved as a heritage site.In tandem I also favour a more coherent model for devolved regional government in the UK

unknown author5 years ago This could be an oportunity to allow the public to understand the process of getting a law, or change passed through Parliment in order to show transparency and why the system exists.A visitor would enter a room or virtual set up and present the changes they wish made depending on deprartment branch, and area and also allow others to support it. A website will also be available to show how these topics are growing unpopularity. This also will be mailed Directly to the Prime Ministers office and could be used by the Prime Minister on the debate floor and will get citizens the opportunity to feel they are being heard and the government does have their interests at heart.

unknown author5 years ago I refer to the news article 'Search for Surveyors Launched' posted on 26th March 2021. As such I would like to see it become easier for self-employed people to become involved in the project in some capacity. You only have to look at the Intrusive Surveys Framework to see it is nigh on impossible for self employed people to be able to tender.I live with my wife and young son in South Wales so applying for a full time position and relocating is not an option, I am newly self-employed, I am also a mature student currently undertaking a MA in Conservation Studies (purely to give me a good base to get involved in such projects) and would be keen to see more opportunities become available for people such as myself.

unknown author5 years ago It is great to see that you are looking to involve young people in the restoration of parliament. I think it would help to reach them via the appropriate channels. Young people won't necessarily check the Restoration and Renewal website for job ads - it might be interesting to reach out to schools and/or universities to present the project and help them understand why their work would be valued. The restoration of parliament can be so inspiring if it is shared in the right way.

unknown author5 years ago It would be brilliant if the restoration was able to offer apprenticeships for young people from across the country - finding ways to offer them appropriate accommodation and supervision in or near London during their stay.Older tradespeople will have experience in relocating for jobs, but I imagine it would be daunting for a young person to make such a move themselves, so giving them the opportunity to do so in a safe environment on such a prestigious project could be a truly wonderful opportunity.
